Days of Awe: September 17 - 23

This week, I turn to the tradition of the Jewish faith. Last Friday at sundown was the beginning of the Jewish New Year Rosh Hashanah and next Sunday, 10 days later is Yom Kippur or the Day of Atonement. This week in between the two high holy days is called the Days of Awe. This is a time for self-reflection and a time for reconciliation. Sounds like a time for mindfulness to me.

These Days of Awe remind us that life is a shared experience. Our lives are connected to each other through our web of relationships. The true goal of mindfulness is not so much for our individual happiness. We wake up to the present moment in order to experience the fullness of life. Inevitably, we change in that process. Hopefully, we find freedom for ourselves and for others.

To forgive is to set a prisoner free and discover that the prisoner was you.

Practice

This period is all about repentance. Practice lovingkindness for a difficult person. Follow up with a letter or make a phone call. Reflect if there is a way to bring healing to a troubled relationship.
