Ellen, a wise woman and friend, once told me, "That which we love, we never lose. Love just changes form." This week I said goodbye to Rico, my constant companion for the past eight years. Australian cattle dogs are fiercely loyal and Rico was no exception. He adored our daughter Taniya. From day one, he was my protector. Rico was relentless when it came to playing ball. He had an anxious streak. He attacked mailboxes and trash cans. He had an ear-piercing bark. He meditated with me and we shared a lifetime of walks. He loved me unconditionally and I miss him.

Practice
Catholics have a concept called the communion of saints. It is the belief that death cannot separate us from those we love and that we are all part of something bigger. Together we hold one another and are connected forever. This week's practice embodies this belief.
Find a quiet place where you won't be disturbed. Take a few breaths to calm the body and mind. Settle into the present moment.
Now envision the most important people in your life one by one. Imagine their faces. Relive the special moments you've shared. Feel them with you in your heart. Experience the connection with each one and wish them well being.
Expand the circle to include relatives, friends and colleagues. Send them all loving kindness. Think back on your childhood and remember neighbors, classmates, teachers, and pets. Take your time and continue this process, reviewing your entire life, remembering those living and those who have passed. Thank them for the difference they made. Allow your heart to swell with gratitude for this circle of love.
Realize you are loved and continue to be loved every moment. Let this love shine on all those you meet today.
