Meditation can be thought of as a formal practice as well as an informal practice. Sitting like a monk is formal practice while taking a mindful breath before answering the cell phone is informal practice. Both are legitimate ways to be mindful. Each week this month, I focus on the basics of formal practice also known as taking one's cushion although I personally don't sit cross-legged on a meditation cushion.
If you can, create a physical environment that invites and encourages you to pause each day. Find a place with minimal distraction. Fill it with beautiful flowers, favorite pictures, a comfortable chair or cushion, soft music, a candle, incense, religious symbols, elements from nature, or anything else that inspires you and establishes a sense of serenity and sanctuary. Or leave it simple and sparse.
None of this is essential. I meditate in my bedroom, at the beach, on airplanes, in the check-out line, and in conference rooms; however, having a dedicated space makes a difference. I’ve found when my outer world is cluttered, my inner world feels chaotic; when it is orderly on the outside, it is easier to find tranquility on the inside.
Coming into a quiet spot in my home makes it easier to come into a quiet spot in my heart.
Practice
Maybe after a bit of spring cleaning, claim a spot for meditation in your home and make it uniquely yours. Then imagine your heart as your inner home. Do some interior spring cleaning in the inner chamber of your heart. Sweep out what no longer serves. Open some windows and let in fresh air. Hang a mantra on a wall. Place a spiritual bouquet of good intentions in the main hallway. Make it a habit to return here often. Remember your body is a temple and your heart is a shrine.
