Did you know if a violin is placed on a table without anything touching it and the strings of a second violin nearby are played, the strings on the first violin will vibrate in return? This phenomenon is known as sympathetic resonance. I can tell you from my recent experience of losing a beloved pet, sympathetic resonance applies not only to musical instruments but also to human hearts. When my heart strings were plucked by grief, friends and family responded with comforting words and acts of kindness. I received thoughtful cards, unexpected visits, caring texts and emails, delicious food, photos and videos of Rico, and warm hugs. This experience of tender care touched me deeply.
Sympathetic resonance is an expression of compassion. When a trembling heart is seen and held by another, something beautiful happens. In the absence of Rico, I felt the shared presence of so many loving hearts. In the silence of sorrow, I swear I heard violins.
Practice
While I'm on the subject of violins, music has the amazing ability to reach the places beyond words. The first song was recently shared with me. The other two are from my personal playlist. Let the notes wash over you as a type of meditation.
Practice sympathetic resonance. Are you experiencing loss? Or maybe someone you care about is experiencing loss. Find a way to connect with them. Create a shared space of connection. Whether you are the giver or the receiver, be present for whatever arises. Hold it tenderly. Allow the shared experience to soothe and comfort. Listen for the violins.
