Lectio Divina

Religious traditions throughout the world have various methods for contemplating sacred texts. Here’s a time-tested practice for inspired reading:

Read the passage three times:

  1. Allow the words to speak to the mind. What images, memories, associations surface? Jot down your thoughts and ideas.

  2. Allow the words to speak to the heart. What feelings and emotions arise? Pay attention to any sensations in the body.

  3. Allow the words to soak into your bones. Sit in silence for a few minutes and savor the experience. Respond however you feel inspired.

Sacred reading or Lectio Divina as outlined above is a contemplative practice originated in monasteries and practiced by Benedictine monks for more than a thousand years. It can be applied to any text or work of art (Visio Divina or Sacred Seeing.)

Cynthia Bourgeault, one of my favorite modern day mystics and writers, explains Lectio Divina more fully. Check it out: https://inaspaciousplace.wordpress.com/2014/10/23/cynthia-bourgeault-on-lectio-divina-1/
