In the face of political turmoil, climate crisis, rampant racism, economic injustice, and wars throughout the world, I become overwhelmed in my need to save the whole world. This is my superman syndrome. If I'm not mindful, I give into despair because I can't do everything. The danger is that the feeling of helplessness paralyzes me from doing anything.
In these moments, I need to remember to look into my heart and see the one thing that has been given to me to do this day. I may not be able to do everything, but heaven help me from doing nothing. There is always something I can do, if only I am brave enough to look into the eyes of those around me.
Practice
Take a seat on the earth, even if and especially when the troubles of life unsettle you. Sense the breath. Aim to feel centered and grounded, whether successful or not. If you need extra support, tap into your resources. Picture a close friend, a favorite relative or a beloved pet sitting beside you. It doesn't matter if they are separated by time and distance, whether present in this life or have passed to the next. Or invite a spiritual being like Jesus, Buddha or a guiding ancestor to be present. Maybe call on your wiser self. Remember you are not alone. Love is always surrounding you in one form or another. Rest in this love.
Imagine lighting a candle within your heart to dispel the darkness. As you breathe, see the candle grow in warmth and brightness. Each breath fans the flame more brightly. Draw strength from your inner resources. When you are ready, and only if you are ready, recall the troubles, worries, and fears that you are carrying. Renewed by love, send out that love to the people and areas that most need it. Visualize your heart as a lighthouse, sending out beacons of wellbeing, healing, care, and compassion. Focus on one intention at a time. Either in your imagination or with your actual body, turn and face the direction of the person or place in need. Breathe in and gather your desires for healing and wholeness. Breathe out, envision your hopes riding on the breath and shining out until it reaches the intended destination. Repeat this process over and over as many times as needed.
Remember, only one candle is needed to dispel the darkness. As you enter into the rest of the day, imagine a single flame continuing to burn from within. Let it shine on all that you do and on everyone you meet.
