Eight years ago, my dad died at home, surrounded by family, as the light of a new day filled the room. It was one of the most profound moments I've experienced. Something changed forever for me that morning.
Today, Christians around the world celebrate the power of love to triumph over death. My mindfulness practice reminds me that each exhale is a letting go, a death of sorts, and each inhale is a new gift, a resurrection to life. My favorite time to meditate is in the early morning. As I sit in stillness, I almost feel the light of love surrounding me. I imagine it filling my heart. My prayer is that it spills out through the rest of the day. May I die each day to all that is small and unkind and live again to love and grace.
Practice
Find a sunny spot where you won't be disturbed. If it is rainy or cloudy where you are, find a sunny spot in your imagination or memory. Settle into the body. Feel the steady rhythm of the breath. Don't pay any mind to the words and worries running through your head. Let them fade into the background as you focus on the beauty of the new day.
Feel the sun bathing you in its warmth and light. Maybe you hear the sound of birds or hear the wind whispering through the leaves. With each breath, relax just a little more. With each new moment, receive all the gifts held within this new day. Trust that the unspoken cares within your heart are heard and honored. Allow the light to steadily fill your heart. Remain here until the point of overflowing.
Imagine the light spilling over to loved ones and those in need. Let in shine on all those who cross your path this day. See it reflected in the eyes of those you meet. Allow it to soften your heart and change the world.
