Fall Leaves: November 2 - 8

ree

I'm leaning into the season and taking a lesson from the Autumn leaves. In these times of uncertainty, my natural inclination is to cling to my side of the story, the security of my job, my long held beliefs, in search of a solid place to stand. Unfortunately, everything feels like shifting sand. Maybe it's time for a change in perspective.

The leaves are so beautiful, so brilliant, so temporary. They teach us that everything changes. In autumn, nature says to let go of what no longer serves, to prepare for the cold of winter, and hope for the newness of spring. I'm so weary of frustration and worry. I'm tired of the words used to divide each other into "us" and "them". I'm sad for all that has been lost. Time to let go, not as a sign of resignation, but rather a recognition that I need to examine the places in my heart that have hardened, to maybe experience the dead of winter so as to find hope in the seasons ahead.

Practice

Find a quiet place where you won't be disturbed. Usually we sit but maybe today you might explore what it is like to stand and meditate. Whether you're sitting or standing, feel your feet against the ground. Sense the weight of your legs pressing downward. Imagine roots extending from the bottom of your feet into the earth, anchoring and grounding you like a tree. Now lift your palms upward like branches reaching to the sky. Planted between heaven and earth, breathe in and breathe out.

Allow a single thought, feeling or emotion to surface. Think of it as an autumn leaf. Notice its color and texture. Reflect on how it has served you or protected you. Honor it and let it go. In your mind's eye, watch it drift to the ground. Allow the next leaf to take shape. Recognize it and release it. Repeat this process as often as you wish.

What beliefs are getting in the way? What commitments no longer serve you? What plans have become burdensome? What other leaves can you let go off? What can you drop to free up space for new growth in the seasons ahead? Be patient as each leaf presents itself. Trust that this season is leading you where you need to be.
