Original Goodness: June 14 - 20

This is my dad holding me.
This is my dad holding me.

We come into this world innocent and pure but somewhere along the way most of us lose sight of our truest self. Sage, my grandson, was born just a few months ago. There is nothing more beautiful than his tiny little body, his legs kicking, his impossibly small fingers reaching out, his chest breathing. Such magnificence. I am in awe. I am in love. How do we each get back to the place of original goodness?

Much of my adult life has been finding my way back home. Mindfulness is an important part of this journey. Meditation can be a dangerous thing. It challenges us to earnestly look inside, to recognize how we’ve gone astray, to acknowledge the false masks we’ve accumulated along the way. Often is easier to ignore the difficult parts of life, but freedom comes from embracing all of who we are. This inner process of exploration and examination is the path through suffering to discovering healing and wholeness.

Taniya, my daughter, once shared this poem with me. Read it and take a few moments to reflect.

Our Deepest Fear

Marianne Williamson

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.

Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.

It is our light, not our darkness

That most frightens us.

We ask ourselves

Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?

Actually, who are you not to be?

You are a child of God.

Your playing small

Does not serve the world.

There's nothing enlightened about shrinking

So that other people won't feel insecure around you.

We are all meant to shine,

As children do.

We were born to make manifest

The glory of God that is within us.

It's not just in some of us;

It's in everyone.

And as we let our own light shine,

We unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.

As we're liberated from our own fear,

Our presence automatically liberates others.
