Opening: October 8 - 14

The frontal cortex is the most evolved part of the brain. It is where we reason, plan, and are self-aware. When scientists examined the brains of meditators, they saw that during meditation, the frontal cortex literally calmed down. MRIs revealed a quiet space with less activity in the brain.

Between the stimulus and the response there is a space.

In that space is our power to choose our response.

In our response lies our growth and our freedom.

Viktor Frankl

Practice

Establish the habit of mindfulness and create more space in your brain and your life. Discover inner freedom.

Use the breath as an anchor. Breathe in and know that you are breathing. Sense where the breath is most present in the body. Is it the nostrils, the throat, the belly?

As thoughts arise, return your awareness to the breath. This is the basic practice. Thoughts will surface over and over again. No worry. Thoughts are not distractions but invitations to return to awareness of the breath again and again. Returning to awareness is the essence of mindfulness.
