Lately when I've sat down to write these weekly reflections, I'm mostly aware of heaviness and uncertainty. Often I struggle to find inspiration. While these feelings are valid, they don't truly account for most of the minutes of my day. I overlook the small moments of love and beauty and joy found in every day. It is an easy mistake to undervalue the little things because they don't stop wars, solve climate change, or heal terminal illnesses. But at the end of the day, it is these moments that mean the most. So today I'm eating ice cream at a local dairy to celebrate a friend's birthday and then taking a bike ride with other friends. I hope I delight in every moment.
Practice
When my kids were young and we piled in the van to drive home from a weekend at the beach or some other adventure, before we got out of the driveway, I made everyone share their favorite part. To this day, I still impose this tradition if you happen to be in the car with me. Just ask my kids.
So now it is your turn. Look back on the week. What was your favorite part? Where did you see love and beauty and joy? Maybe make this a daily practice before you rest your head on the pillow at night. Be sure to share the moment with someone else. Over a lifetime, these little moments add up.
